Health Matters is a drop-in style recreational sports and healthy eating program for homeless and at-risk youth age 16 and up. Youth work together with support staff to create a nutritious meal that focuses on healthy meal requirements as set by Canada’s Food Guide. In addition, everyone participates in a recreational sport or activity, or attends an educational outing.
Health Matters is run throughout the week during the evening. The program provides youth with an opportunity for healthy socialization during “at-risk” hours, allows them to prepare and consume a healthy meal together, and gives them the opportunity to participate in an organized sport or activity. In addition, youth are able to access various social supports such as mental health or addictions resources, housing help, identification, and more.
