OCH blog – Beer Calendars, blackout poetry, and we continue to be bad at trivia

We begin by reminding you of an informative and exciting event coming up Thursday – our Charitable Giving Seminar, with the experts at SunLife, happening Thursday, October 25th, at 4:00 at Operation Come Home in our upstairs employment program area. (150 Gloucester.) There you will learn how to maximize a donation, how to help your family members in donating, and how to earn yourself money through philanthropy. It’s win-win! Come early for a tour of OCH, those begin at 3:00. RSVP to eric@operationcomehome.ca to reserve a spot!

Topics covered will be:

  • Learn how you can contribute to the long-term success of Operation Come Home.
  • Win-win: learn how your loved ones can benefit from giving to Operation Come Home.
  • Planned giving: how to leave a charitable gift that benefits your estate.
  • How you can help build the legacy of Operation Come Home.

Our team had an absolute blast at Ottawa Music Trivia Night, once again! A great event every single year, this year might have been the best yet. A crowd full of teams in costumes, some rousing sing-a-longs, and wonderful live and silent auction items brought the total amount raised to new heights! The proceeds from the event were split between OCH and the Youth Now Farm.

That being said, the two teams fielded by Operation Come Home had bad nights. Oh, we had fun. A TON of fun. But we did not come close to winning. Both of our teams finished outside the top ten, and with the totals still being tabulated, we fear we also finished outside the top 20. Congratulations to Rough Tradethe team who won the evening (bottom right)! Instead of photos of our team celebrating, which we had planned, here are photos of Lynda teaching Eric to do yoga on the floor of the Sala San Marco banquet hall.

We recently started a new component of our #ArtWorks program, thanks to United World Voices. Elly and UWV provided the cameras for some of our youth to begin a photo-journal. In addition they are working on many other forms of artistic expression. Here, on Tuesday, Kat is teaching ‘blackout poetry’. We ripped pages out of a book, circled the words we liked on that page, and then blacked out the rest of it. And bingo! Poem!

Nita Beer announced a very cool holiday program this week – an advent calendar! OF BEER! Nita, in collaboration with 11 other local microbreweries, have launched the Craft Holiday Beer Calendar. 24 days in December until Christmas, 24 different local craft beers to try. And we’re delivering them! You can order yours here.

And finally this week, the teaser video of a future series – Amanda Explains OCH!
