OCH Blog: Thanksgiving, art, and Trivia Season is upon us!

It is officially Trivia Season, as OCH is involved with two big upcoming trivia events! So here’s what you’re going to be doing in October: On Saturday the 13th, you’ll be joining us at the IODE Walter Baker chapter’s Smarty Pants Trivia Night! 7:00 at the Barrhaven Legion, bring your smartest big-brained friends to compete against other smart, big-brained folks! And also against the Operation Come Home team.

Why, you might be asking, is Derick Fage of Breakfast Television in the photo at the top of the page? Well, he is hosting the Smarty Pants Trivia Night. So you’ll get a chance to meet Derick! And heckle him! You know, if you wanted to do something like that.

Tickets for this event are sold in advance only: you can callĀ 613-747-7661, or email iodewbc@gmail.com. See you there!

Then, on October 19th, you’ll join us for Ottawa Music Trivia night, won’t you? The now-legendary event is back, with all-new musical categories to test your brain! Our own communications director Eric will be co-hosting with longtime host Mark Arnold, and that means he has seen all the songs already. He gives this ONE hint: it features maybe the best cover song he’s ever heard since Toots & the Maytals covered ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’.

Thursday, we celebrated Thanksgiving! Turkeys, ham, potatoes and gravy, along with a truly ridiculous amount of dessert, was served to our very happy youth and staff.

Did you know BottleWorks will pick up bottles right from your house? If you have a ton of empties and you’re not sure what to do with them, email bottleworks@operationcomehome.ca and ask for a pickup! If you have enough, they’ll even issue you a tax receipt! Here Sam and Joey make a home pickup in Kanata.

Our ArtWorks program is going strong! Last week, we told you about new orders from Bushtukah, this week we can tell you that the Ottawa Art Gallery will be offering the jewelry made by our youth in their gift shop! Elly and the youth of United World Voices are turning their used bicycle tires into real change!

And finally, one of the questions we get most often is about charitable giving. How do I know what charities are the best? Who will do the most with my dollar? How do I make that dollar go as far as it possibly can?

It turns out there are many ways to make sure your dollar goes a long way, and many ways to maximize donations so that they might actually make YOU money! Tax receipts, estate planning, life insurance and planned giving will be the subject of a seminar given by Sun Life Financial at Operation Come Home, on Thursday November 25th. Trust us, it turns out that it’s far easier to grasp than we originally thought it would be!

We invite you to join us for that event at 4:00. And if you show up early, tours of OCH featuring our staff and youth start at 3:00 and will run until the seminar begins (after all, once you learn how to make the most efficient and far-reaching charitable donations, we DO want you to make those donations to us. It’s very self-serving on our part!)
